There were approximately 9.2 cosmetic surgeries performed in this country and the numbers are only expected to climb in 2012, as trending for the past few years would suggest. Plastic surgeons can perform a variety of surgeries, but a specialist in a defined area of the body or type of procedure such as liposuction or a breast lift which displays more expertise. However, cosmetic procedures can also be performed by dermatologists and otolaryngologists. A dermatologist is of course a doctor who knows and has extensive experience with all skin related irritations, infections, diseases, growths, and abrasions. An otolaryngologist is an ear, nose and throat doctor who understands the inner workings of the tissue, bones and nerves that encompass those areas. Both doctors ability to achieve cosmetic surgery licensing would be helpful to patients seeking the popular non-surgical procedures such as Botox injections of the face and neck, hyaluronic acid facial fillers, laser hair removal or microdermabrasion because there is already so much that they understand about the face, neck, and skin. Anyone can practice cosmetic surgery but it is up to the patient to educate him or herself on the background of the operating surgeon and to make an intelligent choice for their body and their health.
